3D modeling and digital imagery

Leo Myers-2

Part of my work is computer based. I use 3D modeling software such as Cinema 4D, 3DS max and Solidworks to create innovative and modern jewellery.

1-Organic ring

  • Organic Ring:

This original ring is computer generated with Cinema 4D. I wanted to focus all my creativity on an unusual and ornamental design. This complex creation is also the opportunity for me to push the limits of technology. Would all the intricate details I imagined work outside the computer? Before prototyping this piece, I had to inspect every point to make sure it could be built. The first prototype was sort of rough and not very detailed at first. After a few adjustments, the result I was expecting was finally reached.  Two models were prototyped, one in white rigid nylon, and one in soft black rubber. The white nylon ring was acquired by the Alice and Louis Koch Collection.

2-Organic manga

  • Organic manga ring:

For this ring, I simply wanted to focus on the aesthetics, creating a cartoon inspired piece. The method I used to conceive this piece is quite similar to the method I used for the Organic Ring. Only this time, I had no intention to build this piece. I could simply express myself in the three dimensional environment like I would with a paper and pen in a two dimensional environment.

3-Soft theme

  • Soft theme:

For my Soft theme I was inspired by the smoothness of lines and tactile sensations. This piece has friendly looks and people are curious about its design and can’t resist to feel this piece. Knowing this, I decided to decline this design with rings, neck pieces, bangles and cuff links. The originality of this design and its unusual appearance in jewellery makes this piece one of my special favorites.

4-Time box

  • Time box Ring:

This strange looking ring is also one of my favorites. I designed this ring to enter a competition organized by the Goldsmith’s hall in London. The competition brief was: future jewellery. My first source of inspiration was a sand glass. The notion of time and future was crucial too. I opted for an over sized ring with a bright and gloomy texture. That was the way I imagined the jewellery of the future. I was counting on the originality of  the color and texture of my piece; I could imagine and make up any kind of futuristic material. This freedom of creativity I was confronted to for this competition was probably one of the most exiting projects I led.

5-Cage bangle

  • Cage Bangle:

The reference to the future is also noticeable in this piece. The texture and color I used for the rendering are quite similar to the Time Box Ring. Only this time my main reference was rhythm and structure. I first worked on the bangle. Fascinated by the opposition of rhythm and lines in my piece, I decided to decline this bangle into a ring. But I couldn’t just reduce the scale and call it a ring. I had to re-think the whole conception of this piece in order to obtain the right scale and fit.

6-Cage reference

  • Cage theme:

Architecture is also a great source of inspiration, and the links between both disciplines are very interesting. I sometimes think of jewellery as architecture but on a much smaller scale. The importance of the structure, the care for detail, and the creative expression of personality are common to both disciplines. I also like to conceive and consider some of my creations like small sculptural or architectural objects.
